Internet improvements coming to the Falkland Islands

New internet packages, improvements to existing packages and mobile data allowances were announced by Sure on Wednesday.

Sure Group Chief Executive, Alastair Beak, informed the public of the upcoming changes during a presentation at the Chamber of Commerce.

He also announced Roma Stewart, currently Head of Finance and Customer Operations, will be stepping up to the role of CEO when current CEO Justin McPhee MBE steps down.

Mr Beak said Sure are looking to launch “two new packages which will be very different to what you see today, and will be a step-change in what you can get today”, and utilising the service of OneWeb Low Earth Orbit Satellite internet for all users.

All existing packages will be reviewed see if they can be boosted to leverage the extra capacity brought into the islands using the new technology.

Education websites are also set to be whitelisted, so young people in the islands don’t have to wait until midnight to work on their studies when the free period begins.

Mr Beck also said:

“It’s been some time since we reviewed our mobile packages, and that’s overdue, and they key thing here is to look to add substantially more data into the mobile packages for customers to make the most of 4G services.”

There was also a Q&A session with Justin and Alistair happy to answer questions.

The meeting can be listened to, in full, below.
