A bronze in lawn bowls boosts the Falklands to 15th in the medal table.

Lawn bowler Daphne Arthur-Almond has secured the Falkland Islands’ fourth medal of the Orkney International Island Games. The win over Bermuda in the women’s singles has brought the medal tally to four following yesterday’s haul of two bronzes and a silver in archery.

Speaking of her win, Arthur-Almond said: “I really am so pleased! I knew if I took this match today I had a real chance of getting the bronze. That adds a little bit of pressure, but I got over the line.”

The match between Arthur-Almond and Bermuda’s Judith Barton came down to a tie break.

“I got the first shot in the tie breaker, I was holding very close to the jack on the second and she sent a beautiful bowl so she got the second, so it was down to the last bowl. I just managed to get there so what a relief, I’m sure they could hear my heart beating miles away.”

The bronze is the Falklands first medal in lawn bowls in an Island Games and many of the team have never competed on grass before.

“As fairly new sports people at bowls we have a lot of learning to do and no competition in the Falklands other than ourselves,” said Arthur-Almond. “We can’t go to another club and get that pressure. It’s great experience and a wonderful atmosphere and again, we just want to play our best.”
