Processing system error said to be the cause for banking glitch which charged people double

Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) is unable to share specifics on the number of accounts affected but Falklands Radio estimates hundreds of customers, if not more.

Many customers noticed over the weekend that debit transactions on 13 and 16 August were taken out their accounts twice. Some also expressed, on social media, it wasn’t just transactions made with debit cards but invoice payments also.

A representative from SCB headquarters in London said:

“We are aware a number of customers have been affected by a system error over the weekend resulting in duplicate payments being made.  The cause has been identified and the issue resolved, and all affected customers have been reimbursed.  We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers.”

When asked what caused the glitch and how many people were affected it was said specifics on numbers can’t be shared but it was “an isolated incident involving a processing system error.”

SCB said it is taking the incident very seriously and will be strengthening its internal processes to ensure it won’t happen again.

The Bank said its customers are its top priority and it does not like letting anyone down.

SCB is the only bank in the Falkland Islands and customers do not have access to online banking to check their accounts. Electronic statements can be sent out daily, weekly, or monthly.
